Course name: Literature Retrieval and Utilization
Teaching medium: English
A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Credits:2 credits;
Scheduled Teaching hours:24 Class Hours;
Opening semester:1st Semester.
Course Description: This course is an essential instrumental course to assist professional teaching and scientific research. The course mainly teaches English literatures retrieval and utilization, such as electronic journals, electronic books, dissertations, patents, standards, conference papers and free academic resources online. The course also teaches the journal evaluation indicators. The course focuses on internationally famous retrieval tools: EI/SCI/SSCI/CPCI and journal evaluation tools JCR. through the study of these contents, students are familiar with academic resources in their own disciplines, master keywords retrieval language, master retrieval techniques of different databases, be able to skillfully identify literature types and retrieve required academic resources, be able to identify journal ranks and select suitable journal to submit their articles, and ultimately improve their information literacy, cultivate their concepts of lifelong learning, and lay a solid foundation for literature retrieval for their study and scientific research.
B. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
This course adopts the methods such as case teaching and practice operation teaching. In the course, the teacher will enumerate many cases of professional topics, teach students how to analyze topics, analyze retrieval steps, implement the retrieval, analyze the retrieval results, adjust the retrieval strategies, carry out the retrieval again, analyze the retrieval results again, and finally get overall and correct retrieval results. There are many practical classes in this course, the teacher will give students some simulation cases, let students enter the databases to carry out their own retrieval. Then under the guidance of the teacher, the students modify the retrieval strategy, and carry out the retrieval again. Through the practice experiences, let students be familiar with the database resources, master the different characteristics and retrieval techniques of different databases.
