RESEARCH FOCUS

The purpose of the study is to investigate the information needs, information sources, information seeking behaviors, library use, and challenges to information seeking behavior of international students in Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, China. It will also determine various information seeking situations involved in relation to academic needs and personal issues of international students. The approach that the researcher will undertake is a triangulation approach where both quantitative and qualitative data will be collected. Instruments for data collection will be a se lf-administered questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. A sample size of 200 international students will be considered. The quantitative data will be analyzed using SPSS and the qualitative data will be analyzed using thematic content analysis. The international students’ information seeking behavior will be identified using Wilson’s (1999) model of information behavior which will suit the group under study. Since the researcher is one of the members of the community of international students at JU, he has first-hand experience of the problems which international students face. The fact that international students have different educational, cultural and language backgrounds, does suggest that they have a variety of information needs in the university context. The present study intends to take these studies forward and provide a more comprehensive and in depth study in terms of identifying the information needs and information seeking behavior of the international students. As pointed out, the international students form a significant cohort of students in JU and it is hoped that the findings of the study will benefit both these and future students. The findings may be able to assist the University in improving information delivery systems and at the same time contribute to ensuring the quick and easy integration of international students.

PUBLICATIONS & PAPERS

A publication of a research paper is now underway and it has been projected to be completed and submitted to a journal for publication by the end of the semester.
